  35. Compose is a Windows application with four major uses:
  36.  
  37.         1. Allows easy mnemonic access to characters not found on your
  38.            keyboard such as "1 2" for the ╜ (1/2) character, "c /" for 
  39.            the ó (cents) character, "a^" for the Γ (a with '^' accent
  40.            mark) character.
  41.  
  42.         2. Allows easy dialog box access to the individual characters of
  43.            a font. This can be quite helpful for symbol and dingbat fonts.
  44.            A listbox with all of the characters of a font is displayed;
  45.            double click on the desired character and it will be sent
  46.            to the current application. No more guessing or searching
  47.            around for symbol and dingbat font reference cards.
  48.  
  49.         3. Allows easy access to the current date and time. A quick
  50.            mnemonic sequence of keys send the characters of the current
  51.            date and/or time to the current application.
  52.  
  53.         4. Previewing of the many scalable typefaces (commercial and
  54.            public domain) that are available for Windows. You can preview
  55.            a font from a window or you can preview all the characters on 
  56.            paper by printing the entire font in the point size and style
  57.            that you desire. Technical information about the font can also
  58.            be printed. There is also an option to print sample strings of
  59.            all fonts.

  62. Installing Compose
  63.  
  64.         Run the SETUP program. You'll need to specify source drive/directory,
  65.         target drive/directory, and the name of the Program Manager group to
  66.         which to add Compose.

  75.         In addition to these files, Compose creates a COMPOSE.INI file in
  76.         the installed directory.

  79. Starting Compose
  80.  
  81.         You can start Compose in one of five ways, depending upon where
  82.         you installed Compose, your path, and Program Manager information:
  83.  
  84.         1. From the DOS command line: WIN COMPOSE
  85.  
  86.         2. From the Compose program item that was added
  87.            to the Program Manager.
  88.  
  89.         3. Add Compose to your "load=" or "run=" line in WIN.INI 
  90.            to start Compose automatically each time Windows
  91.            starts up.
  92.  
  93.         4. Use the Program Manager's File/Run dialog box to
  94.            start it.
  95.  
  96.         5. Add it to the Windows 3.1 StartUp group.

  101.         Once Compose has been started, you may get an overview of what
  102.         Compose is by selecting "Overview" from the "Help" menu.

  142.         Moved to Windows 3.1 and Microsoft C/C++ 7.0. Windows 3.0 is no longer
  143.         supported. A noticeable downside to not supporting Windows 3.0 is that
  144.         OS/2 2.0 users cannot use this latest release.

  146.         Eliminated code that tried to be smart when printing font names on
  147.         the first page of a sample font. Compose will simply use a font that
  148.         is supposed to represent ANSI characters.
  149.  
  150.         Print Font now queues each font as a separate job instead of all
  151.         fonts as a single job. Print Font Samples has also been modified to
  152.         submit each page of output as an individual job. These changes reduce
  153.         the chances of the printer running out of memory.
  154.  
  155.         If a non-compose key is pressed while the compose key is down, 
  156.         Compose will not enter Compose mode but will pass that keystroke 
  157.         on. For instance, with the default Compose key of the right hand 
  158.         control key on 101 key enhanced keyboards, only a press and a 
  159.         release of that key will enable Compose mode. Key strokes such
  160.         as Ctrl-Home with the right hand control key will simply be passed
  161.         on to the application.

  166.         Corrected a bug where font selection was lost when going to the
  167.         Print Font dialog box from the Peruse Screen Fonts and Choose
  168.         dialog boxes.

  172.         chosen.

  174.         Pressing the Compose after key entering Compose mode, cancels

  176.         with the menu bar. (Esc and Backspace also cancel compose mode).

  178.         Revamped the method used to push characters to the target window. Used
  179.         to PostMessage(...WM_CHAR...), but this would cause problems with
  180.         seqeunce results that had '\n' or '\t'. Compose now slips into a
  181.         Windows Journal Playback mode to feed the application keystrokes that
  182.         emulate using Alt/nnnn on the numeric keypad for most characters and
  183.         emulates press the Enter and Tab keys for the '\n' and '\t'.

  187.         Compose now remembers its window size and position across sessions. If
  188.         the position is off the screen (perhaps after switching video drivers),
  189.         the window will be placed using default calculations instead.

  210.         English to another language. Some sort of dialog box for doing this
  211.         would make sense, but I don't have the time right now.

  216.         Ripped country specific UI into a DLL. Compose can now switch
  217.         languages using the "CountryCode=USA" setting in COMPOSE.INI.
  218.         Replace USA with a three letter code of the desired/supported

  220.         limited to one: USA. (e.g. USA requires the CMPS_USA.DLL file).

  267.         Windows clipboard. It is still possible to double click on a
  268.         character if you only want one character at a time.
